Container volume up 13.8pc in Riga to 245,200 TEU in first 7 months

THE Port of Riga container volume increased 13.8 per cent year on year to 245,200 TEU in the first seven months of 2017, reports Baltic Course.

Latvia's biggest port throughput consisted 17.8 per cent oil products followed by 12.2 per cent container volume with timber coming in at 8.1 per cent and chemicals at 7.2 per cent.

Bulk cargo accounted for 12.4 million tons over seven months, up 1.6 per cent year on year. General cargo volume was up 11.5 per cent to 3.98 million tons, and liquid bulk fell 33.8 per cent to 3.6 million tons.

Coal volume dominated increasing 5.1 per cent year on year to 7.36 million tons, amounting to 36.8 per cent of all cargo.

"Infrastructure and capacity of the Riga port allows transportation of all kinds of cargo, allowing to maintain a stable position in the market also in a situation of complicated competition," said Riga Freeport administrator Ansis Zeltins.

In the first seven months of 2016, the Freeport of Riga handled 21.23 million tons, and annual cargo turnover last year was 37.07 million tons, down 5.5 per cent from 2015.
